My creative practice, Cultural Confluence, is the expression of my desire to live in kinship with the more-than-human ecosystem of the Sonoran Desert where my family and I live. Through ritual and ceremony my husband and I intentionally shape childhood experiences for our children that incorporate both our cultural traditions. Simultaneous Memories are multiple photographic exposures that mark the passing of time on the Celtic Wheel of the Year and the Lakota Medicine Wheel. I make base photographs during my daily outside movement practice or while playing outside with my children. I search for moments that feel nostalgic of my childhood spent outside in the Appalachian Mountains. The process of bringing multiple exposures together is a way to hold space for my childhood memories, my children’s childhood, the memories I am forming of their childhood, and the memories they are forming of their own childhood to live simultaneously in the world. The photographs are then paired with poems from my Begging Poetics writings where I create poetry from my daily journal entires, a practice I’ve had since childhood.
