I explore how humans construct symbolic systems, images, beliefs, rituals, and stories, to navigate the psychological realities of mortality, uncertainty, and belonging. These systems function as buffers against the awareness that death is inevitable and, to some extent, unpredictable, while remaining ultimately incapable of fully resolving that underlying existential tension. Working in narrative figuration, I create paintings and drawings on paper and silk that draw from folk vernacular traditions, art history, and contemporary visual culture. My works often feature a cast of hybrid human and animal figures through which I explore themes of caregiving, family, protection, mortality, and meaning making. Through this process, I layer destabilized religious iconography and myth with childlike visual language, vibrant color, and delicate surfaces, exploring these systems as sincere, but constructed defenses that aim to mediate death anxiety.
