The Oasis

Acrylic Paint on Wood
6" x 4" x 0.5"

by Flanzella (Leah Flanagan)

My recent work explores places of gathering and the traces of human presence within domestic spaces. In response to the theme of kinship, I am drawn to the ways kitchens, dining tables, and lived-in interiors reflect connection, belonging, and shared experience. Gathering around food and drink is one of humanity's oldest rituals, serving as a space for celebration, comfort, and community. These moments have become a recurring subject in my painting practice. Rather than depicting people directly, I focus on the evidence they leave behind—a dish left drying after a meal, a chair slightly out of place, or the quiet disorder of a room recently occupied. Through these intimate scenes, I seek to capture the beauty of ordinary life and the relationships that shape it. Though figures are absent, their presence can still be felt, allowing familiar spaces to become portraits of kinship, memory, and home.
