Cate Irwin Johnson’s work is inspired by obsession and materiality. She uses embroidery, weaving, printmaking, and glass to explore girlhood, community, and identity. She uses historical texts and contemporary fandom spaces to create work that reflect the joy and isolation of obsession. She is interested in the way that community forms through visual signals, and how those objects become memorialized through acts of worship. Using reflections, texture, and patterns, she explores her obsessions in ways that elevate trivial subjects of youth and fanaticism.
