My work begins with domestic fabrics: curtains, tablecloths, and upholstery textiles marked by woven floral patterns. Rather than working from a blank ground, I begin with what is already there. The pattern establishes a set of conditions, and each painting becomes a negotiation between what is given and what I choose to make from it.
This process is my way of reckoning with inheritance. We enter the world already shaped by what precedes us: family histories, genetics, culture, class, and forms of value we haven’t chosen. Like the fabrics I paint on, these inheritances shape the ground from which we act. My work considers what it means to live within them: to respond, alter, and keep.
