Artist Statement:
The InBetween is a space and

time that can feel vast and endless,

but also like a breath of fresh air.

A slight break from the crisis and immense

black hole that you’ve been sitting in.

Stuck there your whole life.

Now, you’ve climbed to the top of the hole

and can’t help but keep gazing down

to where you once were. Actually, longing

for the darkness from time to time.

The sun is up above. You’re as close to it

as you’ve ever been, but it still burns your eyes.

The pain of the good, the relief, is confusing.

Madeline Miller is a painter and performance artist whose work explores the intersection of raw emotion and artistic expression. She is a performing artist with Kitchen Sink Theatre and a former company member at the Fort Wayne Dance Collective, growing up training in ballet, dance, and theatre. Madeline began painting after a suicide attempt in 2023 to connect with and process her emotions. Her art, which merges abstract expressionism and action-based painting, is created using her body as the brush to channel the visceral energy of her life experiences. Beyond canvas, she paints on her skin, experiments with mixed media and creates pieces that give voice to the trauma she often struggles to articulate. When Madeline is not creating her own art, she is a teaching artist working with fellow creatives with disabilities and is a hospice volunteer training to become a Death Doula.
