Through my ceramic practice, I explore the complexities of identity, community, and religious culture. Raised in a Mennonite family in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and identifying as a queer artist, I speak from a perspective that is both grounded in Anabaptist heritage and shaped by humanist, interfaith values. I draw inspiration from Pennsylvania Dutch folk art and other artistic faith traditions to weave together personal and social narratives. My process extends beyond traditional figure sculpture and pottery techniques to incorporate skills passed down through my grandmothers’ quilting and my mom’s cake decorating. My practice seeks to honor tradition while challenging it, turning cultural nostalgia into contemporary critique. I use ceramics as a tool for reflection and social commentary, reshaping my relationship to Mennonite culture and contributing to the evolution of Pennsylvania Dutch folk art.
