Pregnant With Teddy

This body of work uses painting and drawing to explore ideas surrounding belonging, caregiving, and illness. My work is autobiographical while also incorporating dreams and allegorical elements. This collection addresses interpersonal relationships, identity, and notions of personal and collective care. My rural Midwest upbringing, psychoanalysis, childhood trauma, and personal history including caregiving inform the work. My regular, diaristic drawing practice has led to a reserve of immediate images that contribute to a prolific output of artworks in a variety of media. My work looks at the phenomena of Jungian archetypes of mother and child, and illness as well as the theories of Bell Hooks related to belonging and love. I classify my work as “surreal feminist folk” with broad art historical influences including outsider art.
