My work combines humorous, and backhanded dialogue with domestic materials to create a sense of familiar discomfort. Drawing from familial sayings, regional politics, and my experiences growing up and currently living in the American South, I use text as both critique and commentary. Nostalgic and everyday materials are deconstructed, sewn, and sculpted into surfaces that become sites for screen-printed or stitched language. The work incorporates text that interacts with materials such as quilts, kaftans, tarps, and tablecloths sourced from family members or thrift shops. I play with word spacing, alignment, repetition, and obscuring to create visual puzzles that challenge how viewers read and interpret text. These combinations of language and material often poke fun at and critically question the hypocrisies and contradictions embedded in Southern belief systems and societal structures.
