Optical illusions distort what we see and bring the unexpected to our attention. This body of work, Hex Mirrors, appears pieced but is actually woven, and employs triaxial weaving — along warp, weft, and wug — to combine strips of mirror Mylar with hand-marbled Japanese paper. This results in funhouse mirrors that feature constantly shifting views and no way to “properly” perceive them — calling into question the meaning and value of propriety itself. In a time of selfie culture, these mirrors obfuscate in order to free the viewer from the idea that reflections equal reality.
