A map is a way of understanding, orienting, and navigating the world around us. As humans, we try to find our ground, especially in relation to those around us, by looking at the past and present. This could be through old photographs or objects we receive from family members, alive or passed, or it could be the systems and experiences we have with those around us that we then share with others. My work is the result of my personal experience of processing significant portions of my life, ones that you may also have also experienced in your own way. Materials and place plays a significant role in who we are and can cause us to change in ways that are both subtle and overt. As with anyone, I have had moments in time that have been the catalyst for growth and change; births and deaths, moving across the country, career shifts, health issues, and financial struggles. My work is my ‘map’ to help me navigate through the good and the bad. The blending of materials and methods in my work is pivotal in showing that a map does not have to be defined as the traditional roadmap, but instead as something that has a material history, is fluid, full of variation and layers as unique as we are as individuals.

Living Room - Silent Witness Series; Video loop, found light switch cover, constructed drywall panel with found wallpaper, and paint, 30x15.5 inches, 2023
