Artist Statement:
“Both of these pieces were made in the short aftermath of a great personal loss in my life. Grief this profound has often felt overwhelming and isolating. And yet I know it is something that every human experiences at some point in their life. There is a lot of weight in being separated from someone important to you. You can’t talk to them face-to-face anymore. You carry all the things you want to say, feelings, memories, thoughts, experiences, anything, on your own. And as time passes, more things are added to the weight as you continue to experience new things without them.
Everyone carries and wears their grief, their experiences. It becomes a part of who we are, for better or for worse. Accepting that this is a part of my soul has helped me realize has helped me realize that grief doesn’t have to be a lonely emotion. What humanity needs more of is connecting with each other through the people we’ve lost, loving them while we miss them, and building structures that care for each other through the good and bad of it all.”
