The InBetween
a solo exhibition by Madeline Miller
The InBetween is a body of gestural abstract paintings made in the space between crisis and recovery, a threshold that can feel endless and, at moments, like a breath of fresh air.
Miller paints with her whole body, merging abstract expressionism with action-based painting. Each canvas holds the record of a performance, with marks made at the speed of feeling. Photographs of the artist at work by Von Art accompany the paintings, offering a glimpse of the gesture behind the mark.
The exhibition rests on a central image: having climbed out of a dark pit, only to find the light almost too bright to bear. Heavy passages press against openings of brightness, and the viewer is invited to stand at the edge with the artist, looking in both directions. There is relief, and there is pain in the relief.
This exhibition addresses themes of suicide and mental health. If you or someone you know is struggling, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, available 24/7 in the U.S.
